Swampbillies @ OWD Porchfest 2026
Hard on the heels of Bull City Commons' first appearance on the Durham Garden Tour came BCC's second appearance as a stop on Old West Durham's Porchfest, where wandering crowds of music-lovers enjoy performers singing and playing from the porches of OWD neighborhood homes. As they did last year, the Swampbillies performed Cajun and Zydeco numbers in BCC's garden while folks danced, sat, and enjoyed a gloriously warm afternoon in Old West Durham.

The day started chilly and overcast but when the threat of rain passed, more and more folks came out to Bull City Commons' garden as part of the 2026 Durham Garden Tour. This is BCC's debut year on the Tour. BCC volunteers greeted visitors and shared the history of BCCs garden, and how BCC's Landscape Circle turned a patch of compacted construction fill into a lush garden hideaway.

Winter Scenes 2026
While Durham NC was directly in the path of the recent ice/snow "event", we were lucky enough to receive mostly sleet rather than freezing rain. So, instead of experiencing a power outage, Bull City Commons emerged from hibernation with only one burst pipe and a lot of gratitude. Before it all started to melt away, our Intrepid Reporter crunched through the snow and ice to take some pictures for the scrapbook.

Remembering Deborah
Many Bull City Commons members attended Deborah Brogden's memorial service at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church on November 1, 2025. A week later, we held our own special remembrance evening for Deborah. The invite to the community went like this: Please bring your own drink as well as your pink hair, big floppy hat, bright, bright clothing, your kazoo, bubbles, or whatever reminds of our wonderful friend. Deborah Brogden - 1950-2025
Deborah, one of BCC's founding members, passed away suddenly near the end of October. She had a big, colorful personality, and her passing leaves a uniquely Deborah-shaped hole in our hearts.

Celebrating Diwali, the "Festival of Lights"
This year, BCC enjoyed its first celebration of Diwali , the "Festival of Lights," Two of our members, Swati and Manish, shared with us the story behind the annual Hindu festival, which has variations in other Indian religions. Diwali celebrates light over dark, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. So, following our monthly potluck which coincided with the fourth night of Diwali celebrations, we went outside and lit sparklers to drive the dark night away.
