Beam-Signing Marks BCC's "Topping-Out"

If you've followed our construction progress in the newsletter or our Construction Photo Gallery, you've seen the fifth and topmost floor being framed in. By the end of March 2021, the last girder should be put into place and the roof will go on top.

Building under construction
The fifth and uppermost floor begins its framing in.

Completing the roof framing is called "topping out" and of course Wikipedia tells us all about it:

In building construction, topping out (sometimes referred to as topping off) is a builders' rite traditionally held when the last beam (or its equivalent) is placed atop a structure during its construction ... It has since come to mean more generally finishing the structure of the building ...

So, while there is still far to go before the building is complete and we can move in this fall, "topping out" is a milestone worth recognizing and making a fuss over.

While we won't stick a tree on top of the building (read the Wikipedia article!), we decided we would put a little something of ourselves into the mix.

RESOLUTE Building Company helped us mark this milestone by letting us all sign a steel beam that will support one of the landings in the front stair tower.

It's both thrilling and humbling to know that, whenever anyone walks by that beam, they'll see the names of the people who were there when the building went up.

RESOLUTE put the beam in the parking lot of MonkeyBottom. Throughout the week of March 8-14, BCC members stopped by with big ol' Sharpies to sign it. The signing culminated on Saturday with a physically distanced mini-social event for those who felt safe gathering in person.

LOTS of champagne toasts and elbow bumps since this was the first time many of us had seen each in real life for months. Months, I tell you. It was a great excuse/reason to get together and catch up on all the news that just doesn't fit into a Zoom call.
