Judie

I grew up in Connecticut, the youngest of three children. I became an RN and lived in Pennsylvania until 1989, when I went to Haiti for a year and a half and worked as a volunteer nurse. When I came back from Haiti, I decided that I wanted to be a nurse practitioner. I was working at Georgetown University Hospital at the time and decided to go to their nurse practitioner program. I received a National Health Service Corps scholarship to help pay for school, which required me to “pay back” two years of time in an underserved area. That is what brought me “South of the Border” after graduation. I lived in rural South Carolina for two years and tried to love it, but it just was not my cup of tea. I moved to the Asheville area, where I lived for 13 years. In 2009, I got the crazy idea to go back to school and pursue a PhD. That brought me to Duke University and Durham. When I found Durham, I knew I had found my new home.

I was fortunate to meet my amazingly talented and loving wife, Christine, at a social event. We hit it off, and 2 years later we got married! The first time I met Christine, she was talking about cohousing and never stopped. Working together with others who were interested in coho, we were all able to make this dream happen.

When I am not teaching at UNC Greensboro or working as a part-time nurse practitioner in hospice, I enjoy listening to live music, small social gatherings, trying to pick out a tune on my ukulele (have not been practicing that much lately), reading, binge-watching Netflix, hiking, relaxing with my miniature dachshunds, Daisy and Lily, and spending time with the children in my life.
