what we love about ...
For people who don't live here, we just wanted to let you know some things that have influenced our choices to live in our wonderful city, Durham, North Carolina.
Durham has been a booming town for the past decade or two. And despite the current coronavirus pandemic, it has a strong economic outlook. According to a recent study by Moody's Analytics, Durham embodies a mix of characteristics that place it among "the 10 cities best positioned to recover quickly from the coronavirus pandemic". Our neighboring city Raleigh is also included in that top-10.
Our progressive mayor, city council & county commissioners, and our governor, have taken strong stands in protecting citizens during the pandemic. Here are some video statements from our mayor, Steve Schewel, who has been ahead of the curve in declaring strong measures to help curb the spread of the coronavirus:
We are also located very near several prominent hospitals, including Duke Medical Center (less than 1 mi.) and UNC Medical Center (13 mi.), and the Durham VA Hospital (less than 1 mi.).
We are also very close to Duke's East & West Campuses. Whether you love or hate the Blue Devils, Duke University provides a plethora of arts & activities, as well as educational opportunities (of course). Ditto for UNC-CH (11 mi.), and NC State (25 mi.).
Durham is part of The Triangle which includes Raleigh and Chapel Hill, with a combined population of over two million. There is a lot to explore here. Research Triangle Park, located in the center, hosts many scientific, technical, and medical companies and helps to drive the economic engine of the area.
The sports team probably most associated with Durham is the Durham Bulls minor league baseball club, made famous by the movie Bull Durham. (In fact, one of our member households is moving out of one of the homes featured in the movie!) Going to see a game is fun and affordable. The Triangle also sports (ahem) the NHL Carolina Hurricanes, Mudcats baseball, Carolina Railhawks soccer, and many college teams from Duke, UNC, NCState, NCCU, and others.
